Nick and Cassie have each come to Gallant Lake for a fresh start, and end up working together at the resort. Cassie, a domestic violence victim, is a jumpy, defensive bundle of nerves. Nick, an ex-cop, is loud and restless, always off kayaking or hanging from some mountain cliff. After a pepper spray incident, Nick offers to teach Cassie self-defense. Which puts them in close, sweaty contact…. From rock climbing to bubble baths, they help each other learn to trust again.

When Cassie’s past threatens to send her on the run again, they both have to set their fears aside to take a stand for love.

Excerpt:

“You can go join the guys, Nick. I’ll be…”

He looked down at her and continued to hold the door, his expression saying it all.

“Right. You’re going to walk me to my car whether I need it or not.”

“Now you’re getting it.” He followed her across the dark lot, and she tried to define the emotions swirling around inside her. It wasn’t fear—she knew what fear felt like. But the jolt of adrenaline wasn’t unsimilar. She was on edge. She was anticipating, but anticipating what? That Nick would touch her again? Or that he wouldn’t?

She resolved that question when she almost walked right past her car. She stopped so quickly that Nick bumped against her back, his hand resting on her waist to steady them both. But she didn’t feel steady. He was usually quick to remove his hands from her, ever since that second training session when he let his fingers linger on her neck. But his hand wasn’t moving. In fact, she could almost swear his grip tightened just a little. And damn if she didn’t lean into him.

“Cassie…” Nick cleared his throat, his grip loosening, but not releasing her. “Isn’t this your car?”

“Oh...yes. Sorry.” She stepped away, proud of herself for being able to do it calmly and thanking the heavens for the dimly lit lot. He wouldn’t be able to see her confusion. She reached in her bag for her keys.

“You aren’t going to pepper spray me again are you?” She welcomed the wry humor in his voice. This was the Nick she knew how to deal with.

She was hired to design his house.

Instead she created a home.

Interior designer Amanda Lowery can turn Blake Randall’s crumbling castle into a Gallant Lake showplace. But helping the real estate mogul with his guarded heart and his troubled, orphaned nephew? A much bigger challenge. With demons in her own past, Amanda yearns to help them both heal. But will she find the family and safety she’s craved…or become a Christmas casualty in Blake’s latest business plan?

After dinner, Blake leaned against the doorway to the living room. Amanda and Zachary were on the sofa together, watching a very loud movie about cars that transformed into alien robots. There was a bowl of popcorn between them, and they were giggling as they snuggled under a soft wool blanket.

Andy was right—Amanda had pierced his well-worn armor somehow. Torn down his carefully-built wall. Thoroughly trashed his No-Surprises Lifestyle. His goals had swung sharply from business success at all costs to keeping her happy and safe every day of her life.

His stomach twisted. Relationships had always been a losing proposition for him. They were never worth the energy invested. Sure, people tossed around the L-word like it meant something, but he’d learned differently time and time again. Why even pretend it was real? Look at the disastrous track record his family had in relationships. It was like they were cursed.

That old argument, the one he’d been clinging to for so long, suddenly sounded hollow. It was different with Amanda. There was a glimmer of something inside of him that had simply never existed until she came waltzing into his house. Was it hope?

Zach threw a piece of popcorn at Amanda and she caught it in her mouth, making the boy laugh. Tiffany’s little boy. Zachary was Blake’s chance to do things right. To make up for the way he let his sister down. It was too late for him to save Tiffany, but it wasn’t too late for Zach. The kid had his mother’s sense of humor. Her laugh. Her heart. He’d taken care of Amanda while Blake was halfway around the world being a jackass.

Warmth blossomed inside of him, as if he could actually feel his heart growing. He thought of that Christmas cartoon character whose heart grew so much with love that it burst right out of his chest. Yeah, this woman had done something to him, all right. It was a mind-boggling turn of events. He’d teased her earlier about remodeling him along with the house, and in truth, she’d done just that.

She looked up and saw him standing there, then smiled and tilted her head questioningly. He pushed away from the wall and walked over, sitting on the floor in front of her and Zach. He handed her one of the wineglasses he’d been carrying. She massaged the top of this head absently with her fingertips as the good robots started defeating the bad robots on screen. He leaned his head back against her knee and sighed.

This is what love felt like. He was in love with her. He was in love with the woman who challenged him and changed him and made him whole. He was in love with Amanda Lowery.

“You’re all about following the rules now?

“Pity.”

Mackenzie Wallace hopes there’s still some bad boy lurking beneath single father Danny Adams’s upright exterior. Being the proverbial good girl left her brokenhearted and alone in the past. Now she’s back in town and wants excitement with her high school crush—not love. Dan knows their connection runs deep, despite Mackenzie’s protests. But will their new personas work together—especially when Dan’s secret is exposed?

Excerpt:

Dan was a man who was trained to be constantly aware of his surroundings. It didn’t turn off just because he was off-duty. It never turned off. But he didn’t even hear the approaching car until it was racing past them, a bunch of teens hanging out the windows hooting and hollering. Mack flinched, but he tightened his grip on her. Those high school kids would never recognize his bike—he hadn’t had it out in years. And they’d never guess dear old Sheriff Dan would be necking with some blonde at the maple syrup stand.

The absurdity of it set off a bubble of laughter deep in his chest. He tried to hold it in, until he realized Mack was shaking with laughter, too. He lifted his head, and immediately missed the warm comfort of her lips. Her eyes shimmered with humor and heat. She moved one hand to his cheek, smacking him playfully.

“People our age usually know better than to have a make-out session in the broad daylight on the side of the road.” She tipped her head toward the bike. “Is this a side-effect of that?”

“Do motorcycles make women horny? Sometimes.”

Her playful smack got a little bit sharper on the side of his face. “Women? Excuse me, officer, but you’re the one who seems to have a thing for throwing me up against walls and trees and stuff.”

“Yeah, I do, don’t I?” He kissed her again, sliding her around behind the tree as he did. She giggled against his mouth. The sensation was electric. Her laughter. Her body, all soft and warm. Her mouth moving against his, doing her own exploring. Kissing this woman was like handling dynamite.

Another car went by, but they were out of sight now, and neither of them had any intention of stopping. Which was nuts, right? They were in Paul’s front yard for crying out loud. On a Thursday afternoon. He gave a deep groan of frustration. Mack clutched at him, probably guessing he was going to pull away. This wasn’t the time or the place. He lifted his head, and now it was Mack’s turn to groan. She grabbed at his shirt, but he took a step back. Time for a reality check.

“Mack...It’s four o’clock in the afternoon. And we haven’t even talked about...anything.” The corner of his mouth lifted. “I know you want to be adventurous, but going any further out here is a little too far, isn’t it?”

She raised her fingers to her lips and nodded. “Right. Of course. Sure.”

Another vehicle—a truck—went by at a rate well above the speed limit. She flinched, then stepped away from the tree. He watched her eyes, which dimmed for a moment before brightening again. Her mouth curved into a sly smile. She patted his chest and walked by him toward the bike.

“I guess there’s a little Danger Dan in there after all.”

That was exactly what he was afraid of.
