Not only was Dierks Bentley himself an inspiration for Cole Caldwell in She’s Far From Hollywood (hello – have you seen the man?), but his music also filled my playlist while I was writing it. His newest song Woman, Amen instantly found a home on my romance writer’s playlist. I imagine it as the soundtrack for the final scene in the book, when Cole and Bree are in the barn, soaked to the skin from the storm, declaring their…..well, you should really read the book to get the complete picture.
I’m adding a bit of a twist to my Music Mondays – I’m imagining which of my books a love song might fit into, and where. When it comes to “There is Love” by Peter, Paul & Mary (yes, I’m going back a few years!), I can imagine this being the song Nora and Asher dance to at their wedding. Maybe not in front of their guests, but later, when they’re alone together and amazed at the love they’ve found with each other. Nora and Asher are from “Nora’s Guy Next Door.” This is a seasoned romance, where both hero and heroine are forty and dealing with impending grandparenthood. They (especially Asher) both struggle with the risk of allowing love back into their lives. But once they do, they know it’s what they were needing all along. There is love. There is love. There is love.
I’ll confess I thought this song (“Yours” by Russell Dickerson) was a lot newer than it really is. As they say in the music business, it was a “sleeper” that quietly climbed the country charts from last June to go number one on Billboard just last month. The lyrics are straight from the heart (“I was a boat stuck in a bottle that never got a chance to touch the sea…”), and earned it an immediate spot on my romance playlist.
And now that I’ve finally seen the video? Holy hotness, I’ll walk in the rain with Russell Dickerson Any. Day. Of. The. Week.
Every once in a while, a love song comes along that just captures EVERYTHING. This new song by Ed Sheeran is not only entitled Perfect, it IS perfect. There’s an entire (second hand love!) romance novel right here, folks. The video is lovely. The song is…perfect. *swoons*
Music Monday is back!!! The holidays, traveling, snowmageddon and all the other distractions are behind us, and I’m getting back into my routine. And today’s special love song is…Today by Brad Paisley (one of my favorite artists). It’s a song that reminds us to hold on to the special moments in our lives, and it went onto my love song playlist the minute I heard it. The video is precious, and the words are perfect.
‘Tis the season for family, friends, parties, decorations, shopping, worrying about how you’re going to pay for everything, standing in line at the post office, wondering who you’ve forgotten to buy something for, not getting enough sleep, keeping the dog from knocking the tree over, trying to live up to Martha Stewart expectations, worrying about the weather…. You get the point – the holidays can be stressful. Whenever I hear Alan Jackson’s “Let It Be Christmas” it always make me stop, take a breath, and relax, if only for a moment. As this final week before Christmas comes rushing at us, I hope you’ll take some time to pause and enjoy the beauty and wonder of it all.
Himself and I are about halfway through watching “The Crown” on Netflix. Yesterday we watched the “Beryl” episode, about Princess Margaret’s torrid affair with the enigmatic Tony Armstrong-Jones, whom she eventually married (and divorced…he was a complicated guy). The soundtrack included the classic by The Flamingos – “I Only Have Eyes For You.” Himself and I agreed that it is one of those songs that instantly evokes thoughts of very slow dancing, very close together, forgetting there’s anyone else in the world but the person you’re with. Appropriately enough, I found a version where The Flamingos are singing it on TV in a winter setting for a holiday mood! So grab your honey, turn it up and start your week with a sultry dance.
I have a deadline this week (TOMORROW!!!), so I’m skidding in here to quickly share a bluesy country song I just heard a few days ago and immediately added to my love song playlist. Chris Stapleton’s Millionaire is all about appreciating having the love of a great woman, and what really matters in life. That’s a lot like the June Harlequin Superromance I’m just finishing edits on – The Life She Wants. Two strong people on different life paths, and how the hero (finally…) realizes what he should be working to win.
People look at her and they look at me
And say “That boy is sure living in luxury”
In honor of this morning’s happy news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced their engagement, I’m sharing music from British singer, Ed Sheeran, with his beautiful Thinking Out Loud. As someone who believes in “forever love,” this song really touches my heart. As a romance writer, I wish Harry and Meghan (the handsome prince and his American beauty who are adorable together) this very same kind of love. Here’s to real life fairy tales!
I’m going for a more light-hearted look at love with this week’s choice. In fact, I’m thinking I need to write this hero – the lovable goofball whose main talent is that he can always make his girl smile. I’m picturing a guy who just kind of glides through life having a good time, and then he meets a serious girl who knocks him off his feet. What do you think? Sound like a romance you’d read?
